Jilakin Rock City can serve up strong winds, heavy rain and some very stubborn ground. A little thought when choosing and setting up your campsite can save you a lot of grief later.

  • Choose your spot carefully. Avoid low-lying areas, dips and ditches where water can collect. If it rains, that cosy little hollow could become your own private pond.

  • Prepare for strong winds. Winds can blow strongly across the site from the open lake area. Position your tent with conditions in mind and secure it properly.

  • Peg it down properly. The ground can be rocky and difficult to penetrate. Bring sturdy tent pegs suitable for hard ground, and a hammer or mallet to help get them in.

  • Use all your guy ropes. Yes, all of them. Add extra anchoring where needed, and check your tent and shade structures regularly, especially when the weather changes.

  • Keep ropes visible and clear. Guy ropes must not extend into roads or accessways. Use lights or reflective markers to make them easier to see after dark.

  • Secure loose items. Pack away or tie down chairs, shade cloth, marquees and anything else that could blow away in strong winds.

  • Think about your neighbours. Keep your setup within your allocated camping area and avoid blocking roads, accessways or other people's camps.

We've experienced some serious storms during past burns, so don't assume good weather will last. Check your setup throughout the event, and take action if conditions deteriorate. Your tent, shade structure and belongings are replaceable; your safety comes first.
