Food poisoning can quickly put a dampener on your Blazing Swan experience. With limited facilities on site, good food hygiene is essential.
Keep food cold: Keep refrigerated food below 5°C wherever possible. Use an insulated cooler or fridge and replenish ice regularly. Don't eat food that has been left out too long or stored at unsafe temperatures.
Wash dishes properly: Wash dishes in hot, soapy water and rinse with clean water. Use biodegradable detergent and collect all wastewater for disposal at home.
Keep your camp clean: Clean food preparation surfaces regularly, store food in sealed containers and dispose of food scraps securely. Dirty dishes and leftover food attract insects and can harbour harmful bacteria.
Don't handle food when sick: If you experience nausea, vomiting or a fever, seek medical advice as appropriate and avoid preparing or handling food for others. Some illnesses can spread easily through contaminated food.
Watch out for insects: Mosquitoes and other insects may be present. Use insect repellent on exposed skin and wear long sleeves and trousers if they become a nuisance.
