Jilakin Rock City sits among dry grassland and bushland at the end of summer. Fire can spread quickly, so strict controls are in place to protect participants, the site and the surrounding community.

No fires are permitted in general camping areas.

Across the event site, fires and flame activities are prohibited unless they have the required approval and permits from the Jilakin Rock City Fire Department.

Always follow instructions from Fire Crew, Fire Tribe, Rangers and other authorised safety personnel.

Prohibited Fires

The following are not permitted without an approved Burn Permit:

  • Campfires, ground fires and fire pits

  • Personal burn barrels

  • Burning art installations or structures

  • Unapproved flame effects or other open flames

Unauthorised fires will be extinguished. Those responsible may be removed from the event.

Approved and Restricted Fires

Some activities, including burning art, burn barrels, flame effects at Theme Camps and fire effects on Mutant Vehicles, may be permitted with prior approval.

These activities must be approved by the Fire Crew and Safety Team before arriving at Jilakin Rock City and must meet the required fire safety standards.

Visit the Blazing Swan Fire page for approval requirements and safety guidelines.

Gas-Fired Stoves

Gas-fired cooking stoves are permitted, provided they are used safely.

  • Never leave a lit stove unattended.

  • Place stoves on a stable surface and secure them against tipping.

  • Keep tents, tarps, trees and other flammable materials at least 3 metres away, or twice the height of the appliance if that is greater.

  • Keep a suitable fire extinguisher readily available.

  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions for safe use and gas cylinder storage.

Fire Spinning and Fire Performance

Fire spinning and other fire play are only permitted in designated areas and under the applicable event safety requirements.

The Fire Tribe operates a designated Fire Space where participants can engage in approved fire activities. Check the event map for its location and speak with the Fire Tribe about participation and safety requirements.

Fire Enclave performances may also be organised for the Effigy Burn. If you're interested in participating, contact the Fire Tribe about registration and requirements.

Burn Perimeters

The Effigy and Temple burns will have safety perimeters coordinated by the Jilakin Rock Fire Department and Rangers. We ask for your full cooperation in respecting the event team’s guidance and not approaching the fire until clearly permitted to do so.

The Rangers coordinating the perimeter before the burn will communicate expectations to participants.

Total Fire Bans

A Total Fire Ban may be declared if weather conditions create an increased fire risk. During a Total Fire Ban, additional restrictions apply, including prohibitions on lighting flames.

Follow all announcements and instructions from event crew. Take particular care with cigarettes and other smoking materials, and dispose of them safely.

If you're unsure whether a fire or flame activity is permitted, don't light it. Check with the Fire Crew first.
