I would like to make you all aware of some of the changes and challenges that have occurred at Blazing Swan. For those of you who are not aware, Matthew Robinson our Treasurer had emergency surgery at the start of November, due to an injury he received in a car accident a few months earlier. Matthew spent just over a month in Hospital as a result of the surgery and is making a slow recovery having to learn to walk again. I would like to wish Matthew a fast recovery.
This unfortunately, has meant that we have effectively lost two committee members, as Matthew’s partner Cat Conner has been caring for Matthew. As such both have taken an indefinite leave of absence from the positions for the time being.
Additionally, Ryan Linkowski has chosen to step down from the committee. Ryan had taken on the role of Nest Manager and had found that this role is taking a lot of his time, so much so that he didn’t feel he could take on the additional responsibility of being on the committee. Personally, I would like to thank Ryan for his four and a half years’ service on the committee, he has been an invaluable member of the team.
As a result of this, the Committee made the decision to appoint two casual committee members to ensure that there are enough people to share the workload. As such the Committee appointed Brooke Andrews and Karen Becker to these positions. As you will remember both Brooke and Karen nominated themselves for positions on the Committee at the AGM, and as such we felt that they were the best candidates. Both have started their new roles and are proving invaluable to us.
Additionally, as we have lost our treasurer we are in the process of recruiting a bookkeeper to assist in running the financial side of the organisation. We hope to have someone appointed by the end of the month.
The planning for the event continues, with us having our first site visit last weekend. During this visit we achieved a lot of planning goals, including laying out roads, figuring out the electrical infrastructure. There is still a lot of planning to do but I think we have a good idea of how things are going to come together at the event.
We have also been working on getting quotes on all the equipment that we need to run the event. Each year we hire and transport a lot of equipment to site and this year we have been working hard on making sure we get the best value for money. This will also allow us to determine if we can afford theme camp grants and how much they might be. This is a process that I hope we can have finished by the end of January so that Theme Camps can have an idea of the level of support that they will have.
We are seeking to move away from Theme Camp Grants and will be exploring practical ways to support our Theme Camps that do not place such a heavy financial burden on the organisation. This may include transportation and/or storage as we explore options with the site owner and seek to maintain the financial viability of Blazing Swan in to the future.
